Though legendary bandleader Bill "Count" Basie passed away in 1984, his musical legacy remains powerful. This 2005 edition of the Basie big band, led by perennial trombonist Bill Hughes, was recorded in concert in Sendai, Japan. The orchestra does a fine job of projecting the jovial, immediate, and exuberant swing of Basie, both in the 1930s swing-era ideal and the Count's '50s renaissance. BASIE IS BACK features not only Basie classics but also a smattering of Duke Ellington hits as a bonus. (Jack Bowers/AAJ)
